Additional information

This coat of scale armor has 20 gauge steel scales riveted to a backing of black leather. The coat can be adjusted to size with the leather straps and brass buckles on its sides. The last photo displays the armor being worn with additional pauldrons and a scale skirt – both of these other armor items from Lord of Battles are available separately and are shown here solely for demonstration purposes.

Scale armor is one of the most ancient forms of plated armor and was common throughout the ancient world. It is essentially an overlapping mesh of scale, not unlike that of a fish. It remained in use throughout the medieval period, but was certainly less ubiquitous than chainmail. Even though scale armor gave better protection, particularly against blunted weapons, it was more difficult to create than chainmail which may explain some of its disparity of use. How widespread it was in western medieval Europe is uncertain, but scale armor was still common in Asia – particularly in the form of lamellar, which could be said to be an evolutionary derivative of scale armor.

Please Note: The scales often have a light layer of spotty rust on them. An example of this can be seen in a photo below. The rust is light and can be removed with some light buffing.
