A Stirling-style Scottish basket-hilt sword is a form of basket-hilted broadsword associated with the town of Stirling in central Scotland and, more specifically, with a distinctive group of surviving Scottish swords produced during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The term is used by collectors, historians, and modern makers to describe basket hilts that share common design features found on swords believed to have been made in or around the Stirling area, which was one of Scotland’s important centers of sword manufacture.

The defining characteristic of a Stirling-style hilt is its relatively open yet sturdy basket construction, typically featuring flattened bars, heart-shaped or oval piercings, and decorative scrollwork. Many examples incorporate wrist guards and side plates lined with leather or fabric, providing excellent hand protection while keeping weight manageable. Compared to some later military basket hilts, Stirling baskets often appear elegant and finely crafted rather than heavily built.

These swords were commonly carried by Highland and Lowland Scots during a turbulent period that included the Jacobite era. They served both as military sidearms and as symbols of status. Surviving originals are often attributed to renowned Scottish sword-making families such as the Drurys and Simpsons, whose workshops supplied weapons to officers, gentlemen, and clan warriors. Many Stirling-hilted swords were mounted with double-edged broadsword blades, although some were fitted with backsword blades featuring a single cutting edge.
