Overview

Swordier - Shashka Saber - Blemished Grade

This Cossack Shashka from Swordier is a light and well-balanced saber and like the originals it excels at swift cuts and slashes, both on foot and especially from horseback. Well tempered and with a sharp cutting edge right out of the box the sword is a great choice for a workhorse cutter, display or both! The 31 inch long blade is forged from 65 Mn steel with a thick spine to give the blade durability and rigidity coupled with a long fuller groove to reduce weight and keep the sword agile in the hand. Even though it has a forward-weighted point of balance at about 6 inches (which is suitable for a saber of its type) it does not feel heavy in the hand as it weighs less than 2 lbs. It is a single edged sword and sharpened only on one side.

The hilt has a bolster guard and pommel of finely cast brass and the grip is carved wood measuring about 3.6 inches long and finished with a leather lanyard. The scabbard is crafted from wood and finished with a smooth black lacquer and solid brass hardware. Like historical Cossack Shashka, it is arranged to be worn edge-up (similar to a katana) to enable a quick draw and cut in a single motion.

The Cossack shashka is a distinctive single-edged, slightly curved saber that became closely associated with the Cossacks of the Russian Empire (and later the Soviet era). Originating among Caucasian peoples such as the Circassians, it was adopted and refined by Cossack hosts from the 18th century onward. Unlike many European sabers, the classic shashka typically lacks a handguard, allowing a distinctive grip and a rapid draw from a scabbard often worn across the back or at the hip. Its light, balanced design favored cutting strokes delivered from horseback, making it well suited to the mobile cavalry tactics central to Cossack warfare. Over time the shashka evolved into both a practical combat weapon and a potent cultural symbol of Cossack martial tradition, remaining in limited ceremonial and military use into the 20th century.

The Maker

Swordier

Swordier is not just a brand – it’s a passion for the art of sword-making. It was founded by a group of enthusiasts who wanted to share the beauty and craftsmanship of Chinese swords, blades, medieval swords, and katanas with the world.

Our swords are not just any swords. They are hand-made and fully forged using traditional techniques that have been passed down through the centuries. Every sword, blade, or katana that we sell at Swordier is made in Longquan, a city in Zhejiang province, China, that has a rich history of sword-making spanning over 2,600 years.

Longquan is renowned for its traditional sword-making techniques and is home to some of the world’s most skilled sword-makers. The city’s sword-makers have developed a unique style of sword-making that emphasizes quality, balance, and durability, and they use high-carbon steel and traditional methods to produce blades that are both strong and sharp.

At Swordier, we are committed to upholding the tradition of excellence established by Longquan’s sword-makers. We source only the highest quality materials and work with the best sword-makers in the world to produce swords that are not just weapons, but works of art. We believe that swords are not just tools, but symbols of strength and tradition. That’s why we are so passionate about bringing the beauty and power of swords to people all over the world. Whether you’re a collector, a martial artist, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of a well-crafted sword, Swordier has something for you.
