Overview
“The Stockholm” 10th Century Viking Sword, Type R - Deepeeka
The height of the Viking Age is captured in steel with this recreation of a 10th century sword which with its lavish Norse embellishment would have been the prized sword of a chieftain or champion - warriors who by sword and spear seized the wealth of the world from beyond the sea to their homesteads. Sturdily constructed and with a tempered blade, the sword is not only attractive but functional and its wooden scabbard bound in deep ocean blue leather makes for a complete package that is a fine addition or even centerpiece to a collection for beginner and established collector alike.
The nearly 31" long blade is forged from C60 high carbon steel which has been termpered; as befits a 10th century Viking sword the blade is wide and broad with a spatulate tip and optimized for powerfully cleaving cuts, sweeping slices and deep-biting hacks. The blade has distal taper and a wide fuller groove to brings its weight down and its point of balance at that forward-weighted balance point (at around 6 inches) often seen on Viking swords that helps give the blade the power and momentum needed to strike the target to great effect. The grip of just under 4 inches serves to couch the hand without being too constraining and is made from smoothly polished hardwood.
The guard, grip center ring and pommel components are truly fetching pieces that are lavishly embellished in Norse knotwork. Finely cast from white brass with an antiqued finish, it very closely resembles an antiqued toned silver finish. Unlike most reproductions which take shortcuts, this one has faithfully reproduced the traditional manner by which a Viking sword hilt is constructed by peening the tang to the lower half of the pommel and then covering the peen with a pommel cap which was riveted to the pommel base. The scabbard is tough and made with a core of carved wood which is then tightly wrapped in stitched vegetable-tanned leather and completed with a chape and scabbard slide of matching antiqued white brass to seamlessly match the sword.
The Type R Viking sword was a prominent weapon of the 10th century Viking Age, identified through Jan Petersen's classification system of Norse swords. Characterized by its sturdy blade and robust hilt construction, the Type R was designed for the demands of warfare during a period of raiding, trade, and territorial expansion across Northern Europe. Examples have been discovered primarily in Norway, with additional finds in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, the British Isles, and the Baltic region.
Type R swords were valuable possessions typically associated with wealthy warriors and members of the Norse elite. Many have been recovered from richly furnished graves, suggesting they belonged to chieftains, professional fighters, and prosperous landowners. Their widespread distribution reflects the extensive trade and cultural connections of the Viking world, while their practical design helped establish the foundation for later medieval European swords.

What collectors are saying
Q&A
Questions from the community
Q What steel is the blade made from, and how is it built for durability? Common Question
The blade is forged from C60 high carbon steel and tempered, with a distal taper that thins the blade from 4.4 mm near the guard down to 2.2 mm before widening again to 3.5 mm at a reinforced tip. That reinforced tip adds resistance to bending or deformation at the point, which is where a blade takes the most stress in a thrust or a glancing strike.
Q Is this a full tang sword? Common Question
Yes, the tang runs the full length of the blade in the same C60 steel and extends all the way through the grip to the pommel. It's peened over the lower half of the pommel in the traditional Viking manner, then covered by a pommel cap that is riveted to the pommel base, rather than using a modern bolt-on construction.
Q What does the forward point of balance mean for how this sword handles? Common Question
The point of balance sits about 6 1/8" out from the guard, which is a forward-weighted balance typical of Viking-era swords. That placement, combined with the wide fuller running down the blade, puts momentum behind the blade for powerful cleaving cuts and sweeping strikes rather than quick point-control work.
Q What is this sword meant to be used for? Common Question
This is a battle-ready reproduction of a Viking Type R sword, built with a tempered high carbon steel blade and traditional peened hilt construction, making it well suited to display, study, and collecting. It ships unsharpened, so it is not set up for sparring or contact use out of the box.
Q What is the scabbard made of? Common Question
The scabbard has a carved wood core tightly wrapped in stitched, vegetable-tanned leather, finished in deep blue with a matching antiqued white brass chape at the tip and a brass fitting at the throat. A suspension loop partway down lets it be worn from a belt or baldric.
Q How should I care for the blade and scabbard? Common Question
Wipe the blade down after handling and keep a light coat of oil on the steel to prevent rust, since C60 is a high carbon steel that will corrode if left damp or bare. Store the sword somewhere dry, and keep it out of the scabbard for long-term storage, since the leather and wood core can trap moisture against the blade.
Q What are the guard, pommel, and grip ring made of? Common Question
The guard, grip ring, and pommel are cast from white brass and given an antiqued finish that reads as aged silver, decorated with Norse knotwork. The grip itself is smoothly polished hardwood, sized just under 4" to seat the hand without crowding it.
Q How much does this sword weigh, and what does that suit it for? Common Question
It weighs 2 lbs 9 oz with an overall length of 36 7/8" and a blade length of nearly 31". That weight and the forward balance point are in keeping with historical Viking fighting swords, built around powerful cutting strokes rather than light, fast handling.
