Tod Cutler – 13th to 14th Century Cleaver Falchion – Munitions Grade – Black Scabbard

The Cleaver Falchion by Tod Cutler is in a form optimized for powerful cuts and vicious slices in a close quarters medieval scrum. The blade is forged from tempered 1060-1065 High Carbon Steel and like historical examples it is quite thick in the base of the blade and it has a dramatic level of distal taper toward its widened tip to both ensure that it is not excessively heavy and unwieldly, but also because this thinned tip creates a slim cutting plane ideal for slicing through a target with minimized resistance. The guard and pommel are of steel and the wooden grip is bound in quality leather. The falchion comes with a wood core scabbard that is bound in stitched leather and completed with a knotted sword belt.

These cleaver-like falchions were a robust medieval sword from the 13th to 14th centuries and a favored weapon among Crusaders. Sharing its lineage with the iconic Conyers Falchion, this style reproduced here is renowned for its superior cutting and cleaving capabilities. Among falchion designs, it is arguably the most adept at delivering powerful blows. Highly esteemed by Crusaders and lower-ranked soldiers alike, this compact and efficient sword saw widespread use throughout Europe during the 13th and 14th centuries.

The swords by Tod Cutler have historical dimensions, proportions and handcrafted aesthetics foremost in mind. The swords show tool marks and minor cosmetic imperfections as part of their handcrafted nature and each has a unique character that is unlike the finish of common modern mass manufactured items. These tool marks and signs of hand finishing do not affect the usability, durability or build quality of the sword but instead form a part of its handcrafted character

On Munitions Grade:

Because we personally inspect all the swords we ship out, we come across items that do not meet our high standards. Items classified as “Munitions Grade” typically have various bends, warps or twists in the blades making them poorly suited for sharpening and cutting. They are not blemished, so they look great (except maybe for a minor warp). They are still a great choice for collecting, costuming and re-enacting.

We do not get these items at any extra discount and most dealers would just sell these as normal. However, we do not feel they are at the quality level we expect, so we are offering them up to you at further discounted prices.

Please note that we do not keep track of what classified an object as munitions grade, and aren’t able to convey that over the phone or email. We offer these items at a discount for those who enjoy a deal, are happy with a quality looking piece, and are ok that these do not meet high expectations of performance.
