Overview
Windlass - British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Saber with Steel Scabbard
This reproduction of the iconic British 1796 Light Cavalry Saber is an exacting replica of an original and faithfully reproduces the impressive weight, balance, handling and distal taper of the original. The 1080 high carbon steel blade is both tempered and sharpened and ready to bring the deep slashes and cuts of the famed British sword to your cutting session. The hilt is of steel and the wooden grip is bound in leather like the original. The sword is matched with a steel scabbard with steel hanging rings for wear.
Designed under the keen direction of Major-General John Gaspard Le Marchant, the 1796 light cavalry saber drew inspiration from the swift hussar blades of Central and Eastern Europe. As a sharp-witted young captain, Le Marchant scoffed at the cumbersome, overlong 1788 Pattern swords. He declared the blades of Turks, Mamelukes, Moors, and Hungarians superior in every way. He shaped the new saber’s blade with a boldly curved profile, perfect for the swift slashes of cavalry charges - and flared its tip to shift the balance and deliver cuts of fearsome ferocity. Wielded by British light dragoons, hussars, and the King’s German Legion during the Napoleonic Wars, its design was so revered that Prussians and other German states soon copied it in the 19th century.
