Titus Vespasianus Gladius - Deepeeka
The Roman Titus Vespasianus Gladius has a blade that was forged from high carbon steel; the blade has a diamond cross-section in profile and an elongated and tapered tip profile. The guard and pommel are crafted from carved and polished wood and the grip is sculpted and polished bone. The pommel is capped with a brass pommel nut. A brass plate is inset into the guard to help prevent the splitting or cracking of the guard when forceful contact is made with the weapon of a foe. A removable felt tab fitted atop the brass plate prevents scratching to dents between the contact of the guard plate and the scabbard.
The wood-core scabbard is tightly bound in stitched and brown dyed leather and further embellished with riveted brass ornamentation and hanging rings. Steel and brass iconographic plates are fitted to the scabbard on a single side.

I ordered the standard grade and received it today. There are a few issues; Kult of Athena wasn’t on the ball on their quality check on this item. First of all, the pommel is not lined up with the guard, it is noticeably offset. Second, if I look down the blade along the flat and visualize a straight line from the point to the pommel nut, I can tell that there must be a bend in the tang as the hilt does not line up with the point, though its not to such a degree that its noticeable looking at the sword in the hand or on the table. Third, I’m not a fan of the rectangular pommel; the grip is short (and I don’t have large hands) and just making a light practice cut through the air will hurt your hand, the pommel really digs in to your palm. If you actually tried any test cutting with this it would hurt your hand, its very uncomfortable even doing light practice cuts in the air.
I plan on taking a hacksaw and some sanding blocks and shaving down the pommel to where this is no longer an issue. Other than what I mentioned, its a visually appealing sword and the scabbard is nice as well. I plan on keeping it and modifying the pommel. Given the issues I mentioned however, I feel that the sword is somewhat over priced and is worth maybe $80.00 at most, not what its listed as. Deepeeka seems to have very poor quality control and their products really are hit or miss. I would only order a Deepeeka product through Kult of Athena, as they do try to weed out the worst ones, however, some duds obviously still reach the customer. Buyer be ware.
