The MET Federschwert from Castille is not just a particularly capable and gorgeous example of its type, but is a meticulous recreation of the dimensions of a famous example of the Feder kept within the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of New York. The project started with a request from fencing master Antone Blair who wanted him and his students to have replicas of a historic Feder in their armory for study and use. Sam at Castille used 3D models of the MET Feder that were accurate to the individual mm level to ensure the dimensions of the historic Feder could be reproduced. He was also able to reproduce much of the intricate detailing of the original on the schilt as well. To bring it up to quality expectations the guard was beefed up from the original and made from hardened 17-4 stainless with an antiqued finish that gives the whole piece an elevating elegance well beyond most training swords. The 10 inch long grip is very tough and practical PETG with a heavily textured, tactile grip and has plenty of room for leverage.
The almost 38 inch long blade is crafted from a proprietary steel alloy that is springy, flexible and incredibly tough after tempering and easily passes Castille’s rigorous durability testing. Unlike the original museum sword, Castille opted to give this reproduction a more modern swelled tip to keep the sword in line with modern safety expectations. The blades are flat distal tapered and have a rounded edge thickness from 5mm to 3mm at the thinnest point. Castille also opted to give the blade a classic profile distal taper. Wicked fast and responsive in the hand, yet safe in the thrust, the MET brings all the quality you would expect from Castille Armory and its entirely Made in the USA craftsmanship and fully benefits from the expertise and studious research of Sam at Castille to bring this unique and historical Feder to life and make it available for your training session.
