Overview

Viktor Berbekucz – Feder with Spatulated Tip and Tapered Schilt

Crafted by Hungarian swordsmith Viktor Berbekucz, this Federschwert is a purpose-built training and tournament sword that combines practical durability with lively handling. The elegantly shaped schilt transitions smoothly from the ricasso into the blade, giving the feder a refined appearance while retaining the robust construction needed for intensive sparring. Weighing only 3 lbs. and equipped with a generous grip measuring nearly 10" in length, it offers excellent leverage, quick directional changes, and the responsive handling characteristics prized by historical fencers.

One of the most practical features of this feder is its fully dismountable construction. A threaded pommel secured by a hex nut allows the sword to be easily disassembled, making maintenance, transportation, and replacement of individual hilt components straightforward. When the pommel is removed, the grip, crossguard, and other hilt elements can be separated without difficulty, extending the service life of the weapon and simplifying repairs.

Please Note: These ship unassembled for more practical shipping. Instructions and video to assist in assembly or disassembly can be found here: https://www.swordsviktor.com/disassembled_swords

The 38" blade is Viktor Berbekucz's medium-flex option and is rated at approximately 12 kg on the flex test scale, providing a balance between safety and control suitable for both sparring and tournament use. Forged from durable CRV4 (51CrV4) spring steel, the blade features thick rounded edges that help resist impact damage while enhancing safety during training. Distal taper reduces unnecessary weight and improves responsiveness without sacrificing durability, while the widened spatulated tip adds an extra measure of safety for thrusting exercises. Completing the sword are a sturdy steel guard and pommel paired with a wooden grip wrapped in leather, creating a dependable workhorse feder built for years of use on the training floor.

Blade is  medium flex / middle stiffness ~12 kg

The Maker

VB Swordshop

I am Viktor Berbekucz, weaponsmith.

Ever since childhoold, I’ve been drawn in by daggers and swords. Already at 14 years old I’ve been collecting tomes detailing the subject, and around this time I started to take part in medieval reenactments. My first swords have been made for personal use, and then I truly understood what sort of stress a weapon has to endure when I wield them.

To increase their quality, I’ve contacted experts. I can thank much to the help of the Hungarian National Museum’s specialist, Temesváry Ferenc, who expanded my tehoretical knowledge. As well as to Jeges András, restorator and my mentor, who introduced me to the basics of swordsmithing.

At 21 years old, I’ve began working on the idea of my very own workshop. It surprised me that there was a demand for my swords and armours. Since then I’ve been holding the improvement of quality as my most important task. Since my three decades taught me that bladesmithing is never a concluded thing; there is always more to learn. The greatest teacher is the work itself, and the strictest quality inspector is the customer. To me, the greatest acknowledgment is that my clients always return – this gives me certainty that I am on the right path. I honestly believe that my creations help discover the past, and give joy to those who take them in hand.

Story of VB Swordshop and the webshop

More than twenty years ago I’ve become more close-knit with reenactment. As reenactor of the Salamon Historic Club and the Order of Saint George (of the Kingdom of Hungary). During this time I’ve met with many mediveal reenactors, collectors, craftsmen, and craftswomen. Which is how I experienced the needs of the customer side. Parallel to mediveal reenactment, I’ve started smithing. First as a sole proprietor, then with two employees.

Without my wife Andrea, none of this would have become possible. She worked administration, orders, and correspondence with customers. So I could fully focus on the smithing. We’ve been touring Europe’s Renaissance and Medieval fairs, where we presented our products.

The number of orders have continuosuly grown, not just from individuals, but also from the Hungarian Defence Forces. The number of people in the worshop also have risen. The Andrea’s suggestion we’ve switched to a company, and that’s how VB Swordshop came to be, and she created the webshop too.

Our company’s motto: “Tradition, Quality, Guarantee” – which expresses our creed.
