3rd Century Roman Zanten Gladius - Deepeeka
The 3rd Century Zanten Gladius has a blade forged from high carbon steel; the blade has a lenticular cross-section and a tapered profile. The hilt has a guard and pommel of carved wood and a grip of polished wood. The pommel nut is brass, and a protective brass guard plate is set into and atop the guard. A felt tab is set atop the guard to protect the guard plate from scratches from contact and grinding with the scabbard. It can be removed.
The companion scabbard of the gladius has a core of wood and it is tightly bound in stitched and dyed brown leather. The scabbard is embellished with riveted brass accents. The elaborate and ornamental plates of steel and brass are fitted to a single side of the scabbard.

Often paired together
This is a very nice gladius. The blade grinds are uniform and straight. The wood is unblemished and smooth. The grip is the perfect shape and thickness, but is actually made of bone, not wood as advertised, which I prefer anyway. Everything is tight, no loose parts. The scabbard is very well done and looks fantastic. However, the blade fit too tightly in it so I had to file down the brass throat of the scabbard so the blade would fit better. This sword feels very good in the hand. Overall, I’m very happy with it, and for the low price this is a great buy.
