The Practical Plus Elite Katana provides a very economical cutting sword. The sharpened high carbon steel blade is forged and differentially tempered (HRC60 edge, HRC40 back) and the hamon is prominent. The Practical Plus Elite features genuine Same (Rayskin) on the Tsuka, with a tightly-woven cotton wrap (Tsuka-Ito). The long tang is double-pegged for security. The fittings of the Practical Plus Elite are decorated in a Japanese Dogwood motif with dragon menuki, and the handsome Tsuba is of an iron ”sunburst” design with a brass habaki. Differences between the Elite and the classic Practical Plus include a cotton wrapped grip instead of leather, 1/2 inch shorter handle and 1/8 inch wider blade.

For the price point I am pleased with this sword. It’s a tool that does what it’s supposed to. 1 major complaint is the saya curvature doesn’t match the blade good. Causes some binding or drag for about 5 inchs of drawing the blade. Looks like that binding is holding blade in saya instead of hibaki. I’m not at a level to make drawing cuts yet so I’m ok with it but could be a big issue for some.

Excellent mat cutter, came very sharp. Actual weight is 2lb 11.6 oz. The big con was the tsuka core had some damage, fixable with epoxy. Hanwei said they would exchange it, though they didn’t have any in stock. I fixed the core myself. No problems.
Hanwei QC isn’t what it used to be.
