Early highland swords almost invariably carried the double-edged ”broadsword” blade, but by the time of the Battle of Culloden (1746) the single-edged ”backsword” was at least equal in popularity.

A few thoughts on the Scottish basket-hilt sword - Superior guard?

Very good basket hilt sword. This is my favorite basket hilt sword, and it cuts fairly well. Don’t let the weight fool you; it’s a very fast sword but still capable of powerful cuts. Very sturdy and thick at the base. The grip is a bit uncomfortable without gloves so I ended up replacing it and removing the basket liner and the poofy tassel, both of which were annoying. The liner is just a floppy piece of fabric that serves no purpose, unlike the originals which had hard leather liners to stop thusts getting through. A great sword if you are wiling to do a little DIY.
