This replica Roman Pilum has a piercing head of iron which is mounted into a hardwood haft and finished with an iron butt cap.

A mainstay of the late Republican and Imperial Legionaries, the pilum is a rather deviously designed form of javelin; once hurled at the foe its wooden haft propelled it with mass and force and its pyramidal head coupled with a long and thin shaft gave it fierce puncturing power. Such a weapon could routinely penetrate shields and still grievously wound the warrior behind it or at least force him to toss the now-unwieldy shield aside as the melee began. In the moments before the close-in melee began the Roman Legionaries could throw the pilum en-masse to wound the foe or disrupt their formation to give the Roman Legion the edge. In a pinch the Pilum could be used as a spear as the situation demanded to aid them in standing their ground against cavalry.

This roman Pilum is forged with a carbon steel point affixed to a hardwood shaft with steel but spike. The steel parts are blackened for an authentic appearance.

Am Excellent piece of history This pilum is quite simply a beautiful piece. It feels good in the hand, with great balance and surprisingly light feel. It is very well made and authentic in appearance. The butt spike is impressive and the tip is lean and mean. I most assuredly would not want something as lethal as this hurtling at me from above. It is a great addition to my collection.
