14th Century “Passau Wolf” Longsword XIIA – Deepeeka

By the 13th Century the German city of Passau had become a center of production for swords and the various workshops and masters of Passau etched a stylized wolf mark on their blades. It became an international brand symbol of quality blades and exquisite workmanship and swords bearing the Wolf Mark were highly desirable in Central and Northern Europe and beyond. Dozens of examples dating from the 13th Century to the Renaissance have survived to our day and are showpieces in various European museums.

This replica by Deepeeka reproduces a 14th Century Longsword bearing the etched Passau Wolf mark on both sides of the blade. With elevated hilt furniture and workmanship coupled with a finely made scabbard and sword belt it forms a complete package ready for wear right out of the box. It is a distinguished and rather fetching sword to anchor a collection or as the finishing touch to a reenactment ensemble. It is also well balanced and with our add-on sharpening option it can be a lively and functional longsword in the hand.

The substantial nearly 36 inch long blade is forged from C60 high carbon steel in the form of an Oakeshott Type XIIa blade. The guard and pommel are tough steel and embellished with brass quillon tips and brass in-fill to the pommel cross. Like many historical examples, a true peen block on the pommel with the tang solidly peened over the block sturdily secures the sword and its entire assembly together. The wood grip is 7.5 inch in length giving plenty of leverage to maneuver the sword and it is fitted with tactile cord risers beneath a stitched grip of high quality genuine vegetable tanned leather.

Matching the sword is a gorgeous full scabbard with a wood core that has been bound in tightly stitched red leather that has been fully tooled and embossed and embellished with intricate brass detailing. Brass hanging rings and an integrated sword belt that is lavishly finished with highly detailed brass hardware and can be adjusted to fit. The brass hardware on the belt components is cast to a high standard using a lost wax process and looks crisp and impressive even up close.
