Sonny Suttles entered sword-making as the owner of several retail cutlery stores in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. In 2007, he learned that one of his suppliers was closing up shop and Sonny acted quickly to acquire that company’s brand – Valiant Armoury. But Sonny brought only a limited knowledge of swords with him, and he soon learned he needed to make changes to the company he bought. Today, Sonny and his son Zach focus on the Craftsmen Series. These models meet Valiant’s highest standards of design, leather work, steel content, weight, balance, and proportion. Sonny believes a Valiant Armoury sword and scabbard should feel like “magic when you hold it” – and he has the advocates that back him up.
Getting from point A to point B wasn’t easy. As a proud new owner of a small sword company, Sonny started to sell his wares to retailers… and learned that the product he inherited could – at best – be described as inadequate. He entered the world of online forums and initiated contact with Christian Fletcher, one of the top cutler/scabbard makers in the world. Christian provided Sonny with an introduction to Angus Trim, the renowned sword maker and intercontinental sword expert. Over the many years since that first contact Angus (“everyone calls him Gus”) and Sonny have become friends that talk swords almost daily. Fletcher and Trim helped Valiant Armoury design and develop a new, greatly improved line of swords. Sonny’s son Zach showcases a natural skill and passion, as well. “In many parts of the process, Zach’s abilities eclipse mine. Those inspirations lead to the creation of magnificent products that King Arthur might have imagined.
He is the father of five children and a grandfather. Sonny is most often in his workshop, usually seven days a week, crafting a wide range of styles to choose them.
